What Do We Do?

ABCI: Achievement by Continual Improvement

"If we allow some students to fail, some will. The only way to ensure that all students succeed, therefore, is to remove failure as an option."
-- Corbett & Wilson, 'No Choice but Success.' Educational Leadership, March 2005

What is Middle Start ABCI?

Middle Start ABCI is a comprehensive school improvement model based on the simple idea that high expectations matched with a high level of support will produce high achievement for ALL. By providing schools with a proven framework, on-site coaching, and ongoing professional development, ABCI helps to make sure that every student meets or exceeds standards. With this model, students who were formerly unable to demonstrate proficiency or work to their potential take ownership of their learning, and high-performing students receive additional challenges and encouragement to keep them engaged.

As a part of ABCI, schools will have the opportunity to:

  • Reconsider what they believe about student achievement and make changes to ensure that all students produce high-quality work.
  • Implement a grading strategy that raises the bar for all students:
    • Students must earn a grade of C or higher on all assignments and tests.
    • Students receive an incomplete for each requirement they do not hand in or that does not meet the standards.
    • All incompletes will be made up within an agreed-upon time period.

ABCI outcomes

Studies confirm that ABCI promotes:

  • High expectations.
  • Higher student engagement and achievement.
  • A shrinking achievement gap.
  • Supportive and responsive instruction and assessment.
  • Improved student-teacher relationships.
  • Fewer discipline problems.
  • Strong family partnerships.

How does ABCI work?

School Readiness Assessment

Middle Start ABCI begins by distributing a survey to teachers and students to capture baseline data on student learning; goals and benchmarks; curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and organizational management and governance. Analyzing the data leads to a customized school improvement plan.

Professional Development Workshops

Through custom professional development, Middle Start prepares and supports educators as they put the ABCI framework and principles into practice.

On-Site Coaching

ABCI on-site coaches are seasoned educators and former school leaders with expertise in implementing ABCI. These coaches help faculty set high expectations for students, establish standards for high-quality work, provide expertise in instruction and assessment, and facilitate the development of a professional learning community.
